CHAPTER TWENTY

GRANNY HAD plenty for Roy to do. First and foremost were the signs. She had a half dozen or so of them, with numbers and a map showing where each one was supposed to go and on which side of the street, which corner.

“And on Sunday I want them pulled up at noon. That’s when we end things.”

“You’re going to be open on Sunday?” he asked. Gosh, did my volunteering mean the entire weekend? Not that he minded that much. It wasn’t like he really had anything to do over the next three days. It would help Wednesday get here faster.

“Yes. And on Sunday you’re going to replace them with the 50 percent–off signs. I always make a killing on Sunday. Oh! And pick up a couple bags of ice right before you come back. I am going to sell cans of Sam’s Choice for fifty cents apiece. It’s going to be hot today.”

“You want me to do that first? So they’ll get cold?” And then he immediately regretted asking her. Of course she didn’t. She knew exactly what she wanted and how and when.

She reached out and patted his cheek. “Baby. No one wants a cold one this early in the morning. At least not a cold soda pop. What they want is directions to garage sales. Lots of people get up really early and start their shopping to avoid the heat and to get the stuff they want before someone else does.”

Which made sense. But then almost everything Granny did made sense.

He saw immediately that every sign that he pounded into the ground—no tiny eight-by-tens stapled on telephone poles for her—had their arrows pointed in the correct direction. And the lettering was crisp, the address clearly legible. It made him laugh. Nothing halfway for her. It took him over a half hour to do the work, and none of them were more than five or so blocks away.

When he got back with the ice, there were already some people in the driveway, looking at stuff placed on a table made out of a door laid over two sawhorses. Now how had she done that by herself?

She isn’t by herself. She has Mrs. Kelly.

It was just so wild, was all. The lovey-dovey stuff he could see. It was… adorable. Reminded him of that movie where Olympia Du-something played a butch old lesbian. He couldn’t remember the name of the movie. Something about clouds? He had seen it accidentally one drunken late night with Ramona, sitting up in her bed after fucking (or him getting fucked, actually). At first he was shocked, but then it turned sort of sweet. Two old ladies loving each other, and Olympia and her lady love running off to get married in Canada. That was before they could get married here in the United States, and wasn’t it fucking amazing that had happened? Gay marriage legal from sea to shining sea.

Yeah. The love stuff he thought was kind of nice. Before today he hadn’t thought of Granny as a sexual being.
